Notes

The band was under new direction after the 1931 death of Bradford D. Gilliland. Gilliland spent his youth in Warren, attended Dana’s Musical Institute, and later became a cornet soloist with Sousa’s band. He spent three years on the D.M.I. faculty as head of the Brass Department, and in 1909 formed the Gilliland Black Hussar Band, later also opening the Gilliland Military Band School, the only school of its kind in the country.
