Note
The Buckeye Cider and Jelly Works was located in the Nutwood area of Fowler Township. The business began in 1880, with the building of the factory completed in 1892 on Sodom Hutchings Road just south of state Route 305. The business was managed by Giles Hayes (1848-1935) and his wife Emma Barnhart Hayes (1851-1916). It was considered a major processor of cider, apple butter, and several kinds of jelly. Giles was a resident of Nutwood for over 40 years and is recognized for developing the Nutwood area — selling land that led to the development of further agricultural businesses as well as homes. Emma and Giles are both buried in Fowler’s North Cemetery. This photo comes from a collection of postcards dated between 1905 and 1920.
