A veteran of the Civil War, Velorus enlisted on August 17, 1861 and was discharged on July 5, 1865. An article from the Warren Daily Tribune says that he holds the state record for participating in 92 engagements during the five years he served. The 1880 shows him living at 159 Mahoning Avenue with his wife Roxina and their children, Ross and J. Bernice, and his brother Ambrose. Gift of Cynthia Rovey.
