He served as a Private First Class in the United States Army from 1944-1946 in Germany, including the Rhine Campaign and the Battle of the Bulge (1945). Following the war he married Mildred Senkowitz and fathered two children, Geoffrey L. (1957-1993) and Lynette M. (1962). He owned a Sohio station in Newton falls with his brother, then worked at Rockwell International in Newton Falls until its closure in the mid 1970's. Bernard died in the Laurie Ann Nursing home in Newton Falls on March 4, 1993 and was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Paris Township.
