Gilliland spent his youth in Warren, attended Dana's Musical Institute, and later became a cornet soloist with Sousa's band. He spent three years on the Institute's faculty as head of the Brass Department, and in 1909 formed the Gilliland Black Hussar Band, and later the Gilliland Military Band School, the only school of its kind in the country. The American Legion Band came under new direction after the death of Gilliland in 1931. Gift of William H. Thayer. PY - August 23-25, 1935.
