000001198 500__ $$aThomas Gillmer Summers was born on February 6, 1921 in Canton, Ohio to Katherine Gillmer Summers (parents May Heaton Woods and Rollind I. Gillmer) and Myron Charles Summers.  The family relocated to Monroe Street, Warren, Ohio during Thomas' youth, and then to the former Packard residence at 319 Oak Knoll NE.  He attended Staunton Military Academy and University School in Cleveland, Ohio and then Lehigh University where he majored in Business Administration before joining the Army in 1942.  He completed his degree at Lehigh after the war.    After the war he married Martha Gene Selby on April 6, 1946, and they had three children, Elizabeth Gillmer Summers Solis, Myron Thomas Summers and Nancy Ellen Summers Allen.  Thomas was a comptroller for several New York based corporations before he retired and moved to California in 1981.   He was very involved with antique cars and ham radio, and volunteered at the Santa Barbara Mission Rose Garden.  Thomas also restored his Aunt Bess' 1941 limousine, which is now located in the National Packard Museum.  He died in Lake Forest, California on December 19, 2003 and is buried in the Veteran's Cemetery in Riverside, California.

Thomas entered into active service on October 27, 1942 at Fort Hayes, Ohio and became a Private First Class in the United States Army, Company A, 76th Railway Battalion, where he served as a clerk keeping the man hours of French workers who repaired American locomotives in the European Theater of Operations.  He also worked as an instructor in the Army Specialized Training Program and ROTC schools at West Virginia University.  He was stationed variously in Wales, Paris and St. Lo, Normandy, France.  Thomas was discharged from the service February 13, 1946 in Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania.  He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star and a World War II Victory Medal.
