Title
A name given to the resource
David G. Marshman-Andrews Photographic Studio Collection
Description
An account of the resource
The images in this collection are gifts of David G. Marshman. Many are thought to be from the Andrews Photographic Studio, founded at 500 South Main Street by Marshman’s grandfather, Harmon H. Andrews Sr. in 1904, and later moving to 1 Main Street. In 1912 Andrews bought the studio of his rival L.M. Rice, located at 13 ½ East Market Street. In the same year Andrew’s mother-in law, Mrs. A. M. Stohl, purchased another Market Street studio, owned by Charles Holman. Mrs. Stohl had previously been a traveling photographer, using a horse and buggy to drive between Warren and small Pennsylvania towns. In 1923 Andrews moved into his mother’s studio. By the 1930’s the studio was being run by Harmon’s brother Ray and Ray’s wife Mary, and they continued until 1960 when Harmon’s daughter Dorothy Andrews Marshman and her husband Glen bought the business. David, their son, worked as a photographer for them until completing his engineering degree. The Andrews Studio closed in 1979 due to Glen’s ill health and advancing age of the Marshmans. All of the images were scans of items in Mr. Marshman's collection, and were sent to the library as JPEG files.

Department of Service Collection
Description
An account of the resource
The Department of Service collection came to us as a gift of Gerald Quintiliani, a former employee of the current Engineering, Planning and Building Department of Warren. The original photographs are from an album of engineering projects that was housed at the Department at the time of the donation in 2015. All the photographs had been scanned and loaded to a flash drive, so no dimensions were available. The photographs were taken by the Perich Studio of Warren, department staff and possibly by contractors. They range in date from the mid 1920’s to the late 1940’s.

Henry Harley Koonce Collection
Description
An account of the resource
The Henry Harley Koonce (1874-1967) collection included original photographs, copies of original photographs, items cut from newspapers and other sources and notes. It has been divided into two parts. One is a manuscript collection of photographs, original and otherwise. Information in the collection indicates that many of the photographs were taken by Mr. Koonce, and these have been specifically noted. Other photographs were unable to be verified as photographs Mr. Koonce took himself as opposed to those which he collected. The remainder of the collection will be made into a scrapbook to be housed in the Local History & Genealogy Center. The collection was donated to the library in 1979 by Priscilla Koonce Ochsner.

Title
A name given to the resource
Dana's Musical Institute
Description
An account of the resource
William Henry Dana, son of Junius and Martha Porter Dana, was born June 10, 1846. He served in the 171st and 196th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, and took up the study of music when he returned to civilian life. Dana graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in London after studying at the Hoch Schule and at the Kullak Conservatory of Berlin. W.H. founded the Dana Musical Institute in October of 1869 against the wishes of his father who later relented and invested in his school.
The Institute was originally located on the third floor of the Second National Bank building on the southwest corner of Market and Main Streets in downtown Warren, but in July of 1870 the school moved to larger quarters in a former hotel on the northwest corner of Park Avenue and High Street (now the Stone building). Martha Dana, the mother of W.H., served as secretary and treasurer of the Institute. Junius Cottage was added on Park Avenue in 1888 as the dormitory for male students, and Martha Potter Hall, Dana’s residence for women, was erected in 1901. In 1912 the Institute made the move to the recently erected Dana Hall of 237 North Park Ave where it remained until 1941. The Dana Hotel of 255 North Park, a dormitory in use until 1941, was damaged by fire on July 19, 1974 and razed in 1976.
In addition to founding the Institute, W.H. Dana acted as the American editor of the Encyclopedia of Music and founded the Music Teacher’s National Association. He died on February 17, 1916, and his funeral, which was open to the public, was held at Dana Hall. W.H. was succeeded as President of the institute by his son Lynn. B. Dana. Lynn entered his father’s school as a student in 1897, became a pianist and educator, and later served as Vice President of the Institute. Lynn died in 1941, not long after arrangements had been made for the Institute to become part of Youngstown College as the Dana School of Music, and to be moved to the Charles S. Thomas mansion on Wick Avenue. Today Dana is located in Bliss Hall on the campus of Youngstown State University.
